WELCOME TO WEEK 6!

Hi Everyone! 
We have had a super week in Matawara! The weather is improving and it has been so lovely to see the sun earlier this week. 

Sexuality has well and truly started in our team, with students learning how to participate in these discussions, and interact with each other respectfully and thoughtfully. Keep asking your child about these, although we are pretty sure the answer will be "nothing!" 

CANTAMATH - 

CONGRATULATIONS to our two Cantamath Teams who participated at Horncastle Arena this week! It is a busy, vibrant time and you all did us proud!

EVENTS COMING UP TO BE AWARE OF - 

We are at the half way point of the term now, so we have a few things coming up that are important to note... 
* Year 8's heading to Kaiapoi High School have their entrance testing 21st September (NOTE: if your child is absent on this day, the catch up for this date is 27th September AT KAIAPOI HIGH SCHOOL. Please also note that this catch up day is the day of our Ski day). 

* Monday 26th September - is our Inquiry Celebration day - there will be more information coming out about this shortly. 

* Kaiapoi family interviews are on the last day of term - 30th September. 

YEAR 8 MANA AKE "TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL WORKSHOPS - 
Mana ake have seen a need across schools to better transition students to High School. We are lucky enough to have 3 sessions for our Year 8's around 'dealing with change positively.' This is fitting in really nicely with our Sexuality lessons and will occur on the afternoons of 5th, 6th and 13th September. 

Some of the topics include -

• Looking after our hauora  
• Communication - assertive/aggressive/passive  
• Bullying - bystanders, upstanders etc  
• Managing Anxiety - what is anxiety and recognising anxious thoughts  
• Preparing for Change - circle of control and the ladder of success  
• Emotional Regulation  

SKIING - 
Skiing information for our annual school trip came out last week. Please note - the notice is very clear on the parameters of this trip, and there are no variations on these, as it becomes difficult to plan and cover costs. We will have our fingers crossed for a gorgeous, spring skiing day! 

SKI TRIP IS NOW CLOSED! Parents who put their name down to parent help, will be notified of the cost of their day shortly. 

NORTH CANTERBURY KAPA HAKA - 

If your child is in this group, a notice will have come home earlier. Please note the ticket sales information, as tickets are booked, and not confirmed until payment is received. We are limited to the first 50 paid orders. 

KAPA HAKA PERMISSION SLIPS ARE NOW DUE - please return as soon as possible, if you have not done this already.

Hi All, 

We have a lot of events coming up as we head into the second half of this term! We appreciate that it becomes difficult to keep up with the alerts and notices, so we will do our best to keep you updated on all things!

SKIING

WHAT'S COMING UP IN HERO? 

We have completed our Literacy assessment this week, and you will see this coming out early next week. Please note if your child was out of the class at the time we did the assessment they will not have it Hero. You should have also seen the Technology Report from Kaiapoi Borough come through. 

SEXUALITY EDUCATION - 
Hopefully you have all seen the HERO post that outlines the Sexuality programme in Matawara. This programme will begin THIS WEEK (22nd August) and will run for at least 3-4 weeks. I will do my best to keep you up to date with how things are going, and our foci for each week, via this blog.

CHANGE OF DATE and VENUE!  

Each year, Kaiapoi High School comes in to chat to parents (children can also attend) about what to expect next year. This now takes place at Ōhoka School on WEDNESDAY at 7 - 8:30pm. Please use the Hall Gate to enter the school, and the classrooms are straight ahead across the courts, that we will be in. 

This evening is appropriate for parents of both Year 7 and 8 parents and is always a very informative chat.

WELCOME TO WEEK 4!

 

Hi everyone!  

What a fantastic week we have had in Matawara! We have spent time delving into Sophisticated Picture books, and responding to these with this focus coming to an end next week, after we do our assessment in this area. Our next Literacy focus is in writing figuratively and we will bring all of these skills together when presenting our personal interpretations of our school cultural narrative. LOTS going on! 

There will be a LOT of notices and alerts coming out over the next couple of weeks as we have many things coming up for our school. Some of the events you will start to see notices for are - skiing and the North Canterbury Kapa haka, in addition to sports events. Please feel free to ask any questions that may arise about these events. 

CANTAMATH - 
Congratulations to our Year 7 and Year 8 Cantamath Teams who competed against the North Canterbury schools this week. They did a great job, and learned HEAPS! They now have their sights set on the Canterbury Cantamath Competition on Wednesday 24th August at the Horncastle Arena. A notice will come home to those who this effects, on Monday.

The next competition for Cantamath is the Canterbury Competition in Week 5. 

 

ICAS competitions are also starting this week with DIGITAL TECH on Monday and WRITING ICAS on Tuesday. 

BLISS TIME - 

Bliss is a lovely way to end the week in Matawara. The Thursday before Bliss, we plan what we will do, and what we will bring to school to ensure our time is well spent. Check out this GORGEOUS creation that was completed today, after being started last term!
