WELCOME TO WEEK 10!

And here we are at THE LAST WEEK of this term!

It feels like this term has flown by in a rush of many exciting opportunities for our team! We have done A LOT, and the growth in all of our children has been HUGE!

Our Jump Rope day was AWESOME with our children doing a fantastic job of helping others, and showing off their skills! The prize portal for Jump June opens up on Friday. We are asking our students to manage this at home with parent support. This will not be done at school, however the prizes are given out from school later in Term 3.

                                                                   Jumping June Fun!

No... Clara and Sam have not lost their legs!
Skipping like horses around the field!

This week is jam packed full of conferences, and there is no time outside of that really! We will spend the week completing learning and of course finishing our serial story - The Giver! Our end of term treat will be watching 'The Giver' and we will be shouting both fruit and ice-cream, and popcorn.

If your child would like fruit and ice-cream, please ensure that they come to school with a personal bowl and spoon, as we will not be providing these.

This week we will farewell Juliana at the end of the week, as she wraps up her time here at Clarkville. Please feel free to send her your best wishes also, before the weeks end!

Term 3 will be slightly different in our team, with Linda out of the team for the whole term, and myself out on a Wednesday. Jenny Collinson and Sue Caddie will be joining us for half the week each and we will be working to ensure a smooth transition for this small change.

In the meantime, we hope your children all rest up and enjoy some down time over the next couple of weeks. It will be lovely to see them back, ready for a super term!

Take care and enjoy a restful weekend!
Kristie, Linda, Jenny and Helen.

WELCOME TO WEEK 9!

Welcome to Week 9!
What a fantastic week we have had! We have had a visit from Constable Ken (see below) and we have been flat out practising for our Jumping June day next week! Please keep an eye out for any alerts that will let you know what is happening on Tuesday for this day - we would love to see you!

CONSTABLE KEN VISIT -
Constable Ken came to visit us this week, to discuss the topic of 'Cyber Safety' with the whole team. This session was incredibly valuable and as usual the children were immersed in worthwhile discussions. It was a timely reminder for all of our team, and below are some of Constable Ken's 'Top Tips for Parents' to assist you to set up robust and healthy rules and boundaries around this area of your child's development.
  1. Ban bedrooms: Prevent your children from going to their rooms with a device.
  2. Ensure your child uses the internet in public/shared spaces in your home - their bedroom should be their safe haven!
  3. Set time limits: For smaller kids, this may be for up to 30 minutes a day or only on the weekends. Use device time as a reward NOT a ‘go to’.
  4. Create passwords: Make sure you know the passwords for all of their devices and various social media accounts.
  5. Regular checks: Let them know that you'll occasionally check their texts, emails, posts, photos and settings. It’s not spying – it is your responsibility.  Check their browser histories frequently.
  6. Explain that it's not spying, you're just teaching them to be responsible.
  7. Get it in writing: Consider drawing up a contract between yourself and your child outlining the dos and don'ts. Include consequences for rule violations.
  8. Limit apps: If you have an iTunes or Google Play account, keep the password private so you limit what they buy. Get them to ask permission for each app download.
  9. Block in-app purchases to stop any nasty surprises appearing on your credit card.
  10. Teach yourself: The best way to know what your kids are capable of is to know how to use these devices and websites yourself.
  11. Teach consequences: Talk to your children regularly about the dangers of constantly accessing the internet and posting on their social pages. Tell them never to post anything they wouldn't want their Granny to see.
  12. Cyberbullying: Keep a very close eye on any evidence of cyberbullying.  If you suspect something, talk to your child first.  Also, take screenshots as evidence for the Police and the school.
  13. Have manners: Make sure they understand the consequences if they are unpleasant to anyone online. Role model ‘good cybercitizen-ship!'

I thought I would just include this summary of Learning Conferences for you to familiarise yourself with leading up to this time. It is very useful to revisit questions you might ask your child, to engage them in a conversation about their learning - as you know teenagers LOVE to clam up!

WELCOME TO WEEK 8!

We have just a short update this week!

It would appear that winter has hit well and truely now! With the colder and wetter weather, we would like to encourage children to bring their slippers to school, to wear in our team. In addition to this if children are wanting to play on the field at lunchtime, we need them to bring a change of clothes (tops AND bottoms).

This week we hope to see you at our Matariki Celebration in the MPF at 7:30am. It will be a lovely community time, where each team will share with you a little of our learning around this celebration.

HERO UPDATES -
We have been busy in Matawara completing reflections and assessment for Writing and Leadership. Hopefully you find the time to have a good look at these as they come through your HERO feed. Maths and Inquiry will be put up for you to look at over the next couple of weeks also.

WELCOME TO WEEK 7!

WEEK 7 and the Term is FLYING away!

This week we were lucky to watch the Year 8 Rotary Speech Interschools competition against Ōhoka and what a treat it was! There was a very high level of competition of all of the speakers, and we are super proud to announce that CLARA took out the win, and the right to move forward to the final stage at the Rangiora Town Hall on Monday night! We wish her the very best as she bravely takes on this challenge, and have every confidence that she will NAIL IT!

Our speeches will end on Monday, with the last of the team, who have been away with illness etc. presenting their speeches. We will then complete our assessment of this, which you will see come up on Hero in due course.

TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION -
The Tech Centre are updating their information for students, and would like confirmation of parents being happy for them to use unnamed student photos from our team in their newsletters? If you DO NOT consent to this, please write your name on this document and I will pass this information on to the Tech Centre. Please do this before MONDAY 13 JUNE.
The latest Tech newsletter is HERE for your perusal.

NETSAFE WORKSHOP -
Next Monday 13th June at 7pm, Netsafe are running a workshop at school in the MPF and we would like to encourage both you and your child to attend this.
