WELCOME TO WEEK 6!

Welcome to Week 6!

SPEECHES -
All of our Year 8's proudly shared their speeches to our entire Team on Thursday. This has been a major component of our 'Deep Dive' learning this term, and is a formally assessed piece of work, which you will see in our Literacy Portfolio shortly. It was great to see all of the hard work come to fruition, and the following students are now heading through to the next stage of the competition - Clarkville V Ohoka on TUESDAY 7th June...
Clara-Jane, Oskar and Kasey!

They all presented their speeches with absolute finesse, and we know they will do us proud!
We now look forward to the rest of our team presenting their speeches on WEDNESDAY this week.

Our new Rubiks Cube Club!

WELCOME TO WEEK 4!

We've had a busy week getting speeches underway. We have a great range of topics from 'Parents need to be more strict'  to the 'Benefits of speed Rubiks cubing'. At the moment the children are busy researching their topics and next week we'll start organising topics for each paragraph. As we told the team, these skills will be used right through to university for essay writing, so it's well worth persevering and mastering the basics of persuasive writing.

We have had the whole school together twice this week!! On Wednesday it was the fabulous Cross Country event and we love how the Matawara kids step up to help adults and support younger children. There were some stunning costumes!! We had our first assembly for the year on Thursday and celebrated with singing, dancing, poetry and Choose to be More certificates. Congratulations to Saskia who won the Write On national poetry writing competition. Clara-Jane and Bella were highly commended. Brilliant results for our school!

Good times on the Cross Country Fun Run!

Coming up in Week 4 we have our school trip to Silverstream Reserve on Tuesday. The children will be working in Buddy Groups to do some mulching, explore bugs and learn about the history of our local waterways. Matawara children will be walking down and taking the bus back after eating lunch. Please send your children to school with warm clothing, gumboots, drink bottles, morning tea and lunch. Parents are most welcome to join us on the day!

WELCOME TO WEEK 3!

We hope you have all had a great week, and you are ready to put your feet up (a little at least!) over the weekend. Winter is beginning to make itself known, and it is a good time to curl up with a good book and a beverage of your choice!
This week we have been flat out developing our foundation for speech writing, and this week we will pick our topics and begin independently researching the information we need to create an entertaining speech!

In Week 3 we are looking forward to our annual Cross Country at Silver Stream on Tuesday. Please, if you can spare a couple of hours, we would love you to offer your assistance of parent help! The jotform is HERE. We will be all done and dusted and back at school before 1pm.

VALUES TOPS -
We have our FIRST whole school assembly for the year ON THURSDAY at 9:10am. In readiness for this, please have a scout round home, and return any of our school values tops, that may have been hidden under beds etc! We would like these to present on Thursday.

KAIAPOI HIGH SCHOOL -
Yesterday we enjoyed a wonderfully entertaining and informative presentation from the Kaiapoi High School Head Boy and Girl. Kaiapoi High School have an open night coming up, on TUESDAY 24th MAY from 5:00 - 7:30pm, and I highly recommend going along to have a look.

BOOK SELLING
In Matawara we are HUGE READERS! We designate time everyday for personal reading, and our team are actively encouraged to engage with complex texts. Part of this is book selling! Each child 'sells' their book to the team, by means of discussing the engaging parts of the book. Each week I will share a couple of these here, so, if you are ever at a loss of what your child might like to read, you may gain some insight to some age appropriate texts!

SPEECH COMPETITION -
We have started our preparation for our speeches! This is a major focus for us for the first half of this term, with the three Year 8 finalists competing against Ohoka School in Week 6 for the right to compete in the Rotary Speech Competition at the Rangiora Town Hall on Monday 13th June! All Year 7's will go through the same process, with them presenting to our whole team, as training for next year.
Our whole team watch the inter-school competition, as it is a super experience to learn some of the finer skills of presentation at a high level.
ALL Year 8's will present their speech to our Team on THURSDAY 2nd JUNE at 11am. From here we will select the top 3, to compete against Ohoka School on TUESDAY 7th JUNE at 1:30pm.

Of course a large portion of our timetable is dedicated to this aspect of our Literacy program, however there will be a necessity for all children to work on their speeches at home also, in order to feel prepared. Get ready, as you will no doubt be asked to be an audience at home for the many hours of practise!

WELCOME TO WEEK 2!

WOW - what a great week has been had in Matawara. It has been great to reconnect with all of the team, and see them all happy and well rested for the term to begin. We have been delving into persuasive language techniques, and learning a reliable framework from which to construct a speech.

We have also been studying the 'Challenge the Process' element of our Leadership programme. We viewed THIS clip which is a beautiful illustration of the challenges some people have in their everyday lives, and how they don't let them limit what they can do. It is worth watching as a family and having a discussion, as it is a REAL eye opener to what is possible!

Of course, you can never just watch something and do nothing about it... so in true Matawara fashion, each of our team then had their OWN process challenged, in an unusual way! Everyone needed to experiment with painting by holding a paint brush in their FEET! It was a fabulous time! We had an experimental afternoon, and then a masterpiece needed to be created! As you can see from the photos, it was a heap of fun!

Some of the observations we made (and goals were set against these) were that all of the children fell into one of the following categories -
1. I gave up
2. I cheated
3. I found it hard and messed it up on purpose
4. I did my absolute best and never gave up despite the obvious challenges.
These observations alone created quite the discussion!

Let's figure this out!

And the masterpieces BEGIN!

On Thursday some of the students and staff of Kaiapoi High will come to us and speak about what to expect as a Year 9 at KHS. This will be at 11am, and all children will participate in this.

Year 7's are to be working on

CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING -
As we are getting ready for our annual Cross Country at the Kaiapoi Pony Club, we will be taking part in fitness training, and games to raise our heart rates! This being said, children need to ensure they have shoes that are appropriate for running at school, in addition to wearing deodorant each day!

Take care,
Kristie, Linda, Jenny and Helen.
