What a fantastic week we have had! We have had a visit from Constable Ken (see below) and we have been flat out practising for our Jumping June day next week! Please keep an eye out for any alerts that will let you know what is happening on Tuesday for this day - we would love to see you!
CONSTABLE KEN VISIT -
Constable Ken came to visit us this week, to discuss the topic of 'Cyber Safety' with the whole team. This session was incredibly valuable and as usual the children were immersed in worthwhile discussions. It was a timely reminder for all of our team, and below are some of Constable Ken's 'Top Tips for Parents' to assist you to set up robust and healthy rules and boundaries around this area of your child's development.
- Ban bedrooms: Prevent your children from going to their rooms with a device.
- Ensure your child uses the internet in public/shared spaces in your home - their bedroom should be their safe haven!
- Set time limits: For smaller kids, this may be for up to 30 minutes a day or only on the weekends. Use device time as a reward NOT a ‘go to’.
- Create passwords: Make sure you know the passwords for all of their devices and various social media accounts.
- Regular checks: Let them know that you'll occasionally check their texts, emails, posts, photos and settings. It’s not spying – it is your responsibility. Check their browser histories frequently.
- Explain that it's not spying, you're just teaching them to be responsible.
- Get it in writing: Consider drawing up a contract between yourself and your child outlining the dos and don'ts. Include consequences for rule violations.
- Limit apps: If you have an iTunes or Google Play account, keep the password private so you limit what they buy. Get them to ask permission for each app download.
- Block in-app purchases to stop any nasty surprises appearing on your credit card.
- Teach yourself: The best way to know what your kids are capable of is to know how to use these devices and websites yourself.
- Teach consequences: Talk to your children regularly about the dangers of constantly accessing the internet and posting on their social pages. Tell them never to post anything they wouldn't want their Granny to see.
- Cyberbullying: Keep a very close eye on any evidence of cyberbullying. If you suspect something, talk to your child first. Also, take screenshots as evidence for the Police and the school.
- Have manners: Make sure they understand the consequences if they are unpleasant to anyone online. Role model ‘good cybercitizen-ship!'
LEARNING CONFERENCES -
The link to learning conferences has gone out for you to book a time slot for a meeting. We look forward to catching up with you all regarding your child's learning and goals for the second half of the year.
I thought I would just include this summary of Learning Conferences for you to familiarise yourself with leading up to this time. It is very useful to revisit questions you might ask your child, to engage them in a conversation about their learning - as you know teenagers LOVE to clam up!
